The Adventures of Fat Yip

My journey to the healthy bod.

Day 14 – A Productive Recovery

Sunday was The Recovery. Not from partying so hard but more so from EATING so hard on Saturday.

I woke up and got back on track with my 4 egg white breakfast. It was my first meal since gorging myself stupid at lunch the day before.  Had a big urge to not only work out but work out harder than usual. Felt like I needed to earn that feast and also didn’t want to gain that 3.6lb permanently. Ran to 24 and ran on the treadmill some more. Lifted chest and tris and did abs. Stopped at the Safeway downstairs to buy groceries for the week and walked home. Cooked lunch and ate around 3pm (back to the reg).

6oz of Top Sirloin with 1 cup of broccoli. Please just compare this lunch to Saturday’s lunch.

Did laundry and did tons of cleaning/organizing of my room. Ate caprese salad for my snack around 5pm and watched my Chargers CRUSH the Ravens. After dinner and the game around 8pm I was tempted to go for another run or go back to the gym but decided not to. I was just nervous about my nighttime weigh-in. The last time I really checked was Friday night and I think it was at 170.2lb.

Day 14 – 168.8lb/15.5%

Back on track!

Day 12 & 13 – Nights of Temptation and a BIG OL’ LUNCH

Day 12 (Friday 12/16) – Night of Temptation 1 and the Dirty Dancer

Regular day at work except I did get to eat my caprese salad in the afternoon!

I kept thinking about what was I was going to do at night. It was going to be my first weekend in SF on this adventure. I knew I wouldn’t be able to stay at home so I decided to go out with my friends. They all knew I was still not drinking alcohol but it still was pretty tough. Only got peer pressured and made fun of like 10 times.

We went out to Grant and Green to watch a really good Tom Petty cover band called Heavy Petty. I was there for almost 3 hours with all my friends drinking but still had tons of fun! The BEST part was over this entire 3 hours there was this older guy dancing by my himself in front of the stage. Lots of hip movement, lots of sweat, and lots of “I don’t give a crap what everyone else is thinking.” Early Christmas present for you all…I took a video.

Old Sweaty Guy Dancing

I did feel like a bit of pansy at one point when my friend’s girlfriend went to get drinks at the bar and asked if I wanted more water…never has that happened before but you know what I don’t care anymore. The night went well and I realized you could have fun going out with friends and not drinking but I wouldn’t recommend it on a daily basis. The hardest part was leaving the bar around 1:30am and walking by all the drunk people eating bomb food like Golden Boy. I rushed home so I could chug my chocolate powder with water. haha

Not 100% sure but I believe when I got home at night…

Day 12 – 170.2lb/~15%?

Day 13 (Saturday 12/17) – FAT YIP’S BRIEF BUT TRIUMPHANT RETURN

OMG…BEST NEWS EVER was reported a few days ago when Mike said that I could have a free lunch on Saturday. I could barely sleep on Friday night knowing what I got to do the next day. It was like when you were a kid and you knew you were going to Disneyland the next morning. I had everything planned out. I invited a bunch of friends to join me on my lunch eating adventure (even created a fb event!). Anyways here’s how it went…

1st Stage = IN N OUT

Cheeseburger, animal style, no pickles, and extra tomatoes with an order of well done fries

I was SOOO HAPPY when we walked into In N Out, SO HAPPY to order I couldn’t help but explain my situation to the cashier girl, SO HAPPY to get my food finally, and in a state of EUPHORIA as I took that first bite of a french fry. It was SOOO DARN TASTY I must have had the biggest smile I’ve ever had on my face. My friends Marc and Matt thought I was a bit crazy even though they understood what I’ve gone through the last 2 weeks. I enjoyed every bite but was already looking forward to my burrito! FAT YIP WAS OFF AND RUNNING! Finished up and took a cab from Fisherman’s Wharf down to the Mission for…

2nd Stage = Taqueria Cancun

Carnitas super burrito

The tortilla and rice and beans were unbelievable. It was crazy to be eating this many carbs all at once. I felt pretty guilty for eating so much on my “free lunch” but I deserved it. I did run into some problems with the last few bites but with the support of my friends Marc, Shelton, and Sisco I DID IT! At this point I was definitely feeling full but it was time for the last stage. I only burped threw up in my mouth once on the way over…

3rd Stage = Bi-Rite

Double scoop of cookies n cream and ricanelas on a sugar cone

Needless to say, I was VERY excited and happy to eat my sugary desert. We walked over to Dolores Park and watched all the funniness that goes on there. People were either a) drunk b) stoned c) selling drugs d) playing with their dogs or e) a, b, and d. Just thinking about how great the ice cream tasted now makes my mouth water. I did start getting a stomach ache halfway into it. Had to take a few breaks but thought I could push through. Unfortunately, after a 2 hour lunch adventure I finally hit the wall. I was struggling SO HARD not to vomit in the middle of the park in front of so many people. I knew if I took one more bite I’d be done for so I gave up with about 2 bites left. My friends were saddened but still respected my overall showing.

For the rest of the afternoon I felt sick. I think I struggled more with being super full than I did with being hungry all the time. My stomach was stretched to it’s extreme but honestly it was awesome. I also got to find out exactly how much food I ate. I weight myself right before lunch and right afterwards.

Before Lunch (right after playing bball for 2 hours) – 167.6lb

After Lunch – 171.2lb

I gained 3.6lb of food in about 2 hours. Fat Yip made a great comeback but unfortunately he will have to wait to be fully unleashed once again. Did probably the worst thing to do after eating that much food. I got home, took a shower, and crawled into my bed until 9pm! I skipped dinner because I was still full and woke up so I could go to my friend’s ugly sweater party.

Night of Temptation 2 and Lots of Water

So far I’ve done the Chargers game without drinking alcohol and a night at a bar without drinking alcohol. It was time to try the house party without drinking alcohol. This was the hardest by far because everyone is there to just drink and party. I got asked to play beer pong but had to tell my friend that I’m not really drinking right now.

“Oh, why not?”

“I’m kind of on this 2 week thing right now…”

“Medication?”

“Haha no, I’m just not drinking.”

“A cleanse?”

“Ummm, nah…I’m on this diet.”

“WTF?”

Trying to explain to drunk people what I’ve been doing these last 2 weeks was a struggle. I should have just started speaking Chinese and walked away.

My buddy Carl came up to me and convinced me to play King’s cup with a bunch of people even though he knew I was drinking water. It was actually pretty fun but also pretty weird when I pulled 2 of the 4 Ace’s meaning I had to start 2 of the waterfalls. Obviously, I could have chugged my entire red cup of water and looked like a BEAST but I didn’t. I knew the girls were struggling with their actual drinks. I also didn’t want to stop drinking SOO SOON that they thought I couldn’t handle my alcohol (everyone definitely figured I was drinking some type of vodka mixed drink). It was a tough balance and it took a lot of concentration to pretend like I was struggling.

Continued the night with a few refills of water and it was great. At one point though I was sitting down and talking to someone when a bunch of people came up to us and gave us red cups with shots of vodka inside. I was like “Crap!” how am I going to get out of this one? I sneakily (not that sneaky when everyone else is drunk) drank my water cup down to the same level as the vodka then switched the cups on the table! Haha. It was getting late and I headed home still not hungry.

Overall it was a pretty event filled 48 hours. At almost every other bite of food on Saturday I kept thinking “Why the heck am I doing this to myself? FOOD IS SOOOO GOOOD!” I also started to feel that I’ve gotten a lot out of what I wanted already from this. Picking up the healthier eating habits and also shedding some weight and getting in shape. But I’m not going to quit now. I’ve got a few more days until I finish the 19 I promised myself I’d complete. Then we’ll go from there.

Day 11 – 6.4lb of Fat Yip Gone Missing!!!

Before I started this adventure on Day 0, Sunday 12/4, I weighed myself at night, after my shower, before going to bed (I have done this consistently every night throughout this experiment). I was 175.6lb with 20.3% body fat. Last night, after finishing Day 11 my results were 169.2lb with 15.1% body fat!!! In 11 days I’ve lost 6.4lb and 5.2% body fat!!!

Here is a graph I made for fun to show my progressive weight loss.

What’s really cool about all of this is that I’ve done it by eating much healthier, smaller meals and by working out every day. It may seem like I am “starving” myself but really I’m just starving Fat Yip, not a regular human being.

I’m so happy that I’m not only seeing quantitative results but also by looking in the mirror too (I promise I’ll show pics of my body soon enough!). I have a little over a week left to fulfill my initial plan of 19 days.

I get a chance to gchat/text with Mike everyday to ask him questions regarding working out or anything about the eating plan. His goal was to break me down to muscle and bones essentially and then slowly introduce carbs back into my diet to build me up with a strong foundation. I am all on board for this goal and also to pick up better habits for a healthier lifestyle. I don’t have a specific goal weight that I’m trying to reach so however low I go is however low I go. I’m already happy with breaking 170lb which I have not been at since like senior year in high school.

A little update on my meals. After voicing to Mike my distaste of my afternoon 1/2 avocado snack after 11 days in a row he said I could replace that 3 days a week with a CAPRESE SALAD!!! I LOVE TOMATOES so hearing this made me soooo happpyyy! I’m also allowed to sub my 2 cups of spinach or 1 cup of broccoli with 1 cup of BOK CHOY!!! WOOHOO!!! I finally get some Asian flavor back in my belly!

Here’s a full update for you to see…

Breakfast – 4 egg whites

Snack – 1oz cashew nuts

Lunch – 6oz of top sirloin or salmon with either 2 cups of spinach, 1 cup of broccoli or 1 cup of bok choy

Snack – 1/2 avocado or caprese salad (MAX: 3 days/week)

Dinner – 6oz of top sirloin or salmon with either 2 cups of spinach, 1 cup of broccoli or 1 cup of bok choy

See you all on the flip side…
